The Acadamy Awards, known as the Oscars, will be rolling into it’s 83rd year in the next 3 or so months. It is the biggest award ceremony and practically the highest achievement everyone in the filming industry dreams about. Just being nominated for an Oscar is an achievment on its own.

Three of the biggest and most important awards on the night is for the ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’. Specifically looking at the ‘Best Actor’ category, there has been many great and deserving winners in the past like for example, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, just to name a few. However looking at the great talent over the years, there’s quite a lot of actors that has never won an Oscar before. They may have been nominated, but they’ve never actually held that statue of gold.

To start of, one incredible actor that may surprise you, is Leonardo DiCaprio. Still young, he has starred in quite a few amazing films with an amazing cast, such as ‘Titanic’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Catch Me If You Can’, ‘The Departed’ and many more all Oscar worthy. He has made some amazing performances in the films mentioned and others, but has never won an Oscar for them, not one. ‘Titanic’ was a huge hit (and still is), grossing the most at the box office until ‘Avatar’, both directed by James Cameron.

The next actor that may be of a surprise is Captain Jack Sparrow aka Johnny Depp. Depp is one of the few actors who brings creativity to his acting. He really indulges into the characters at hand. Working together with DiCaprio on ‘What’s eating Gilbert Grape’, Depp has also had some pretty amazing and creative films. ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and ‘Benny and Joon’ are a couple of his timeless, earlier films and they expressed the kind of actor he has grown to be today. More recent box office hits include ‘Finding Neverland’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Sweeny Todd’ and ‘Public Enemies’.

Ewan McGregor is an actor who loves playing the character that falls in love (whether it’s gay or straight) and is obviously not afraid of nudity. To be totally honest, he does a heck of a good job of it though (I’m talking about his acting… stop thinking about the nudity!). But other than that, he really does play the part of his character and you do suddenly forget it’s McGregor on the screen. He’s had some really great films including ‘Moulin Rouge’, The Star Wars trilogy and his first huge hit ‘Trainspotting’.

Now I could go on with tones more of actors that deserve an Oscar for ‘Best Actor’ but there’s just too many to mention so i’ve kept it short with a few more… Robert Downey Jr, Tom Cruise, Edward Norton, Jeff Daniels, Matt Damon, John Malkovich and William H. Macy. This isn’t even half of them.

The question is, why haven’t these actors won the big prize? I don’t see a reason why. Are they doing something wrong? What do they have to do to win the Oscar? Is there even anything more they can do? They have produced flawless performances in many films whether they were big budgets or not. The Oscars doesn’t seem to be as meaningful as it used to be a good few years back. To win an Oscar, it gave the actors a sort of title, that they were the best in the buisness. Now, it seems that you don’t need to win or get nominated for Oscar to be known as one of the best. But if you happen to win in the process, well… grab it while you can. It is gold afterall.
